Babka

It's a bit chaotic here - most people are coming in to get goodies from the bakery, there isn't much space so everyone is squeezing by each other & it's pretty loud.

The breakfast menu is pretty generic but they had some interesting specials. We both had the Menemen scrambled eggs - with roast capsicum, feta, tomato, chilli, and herbs. I found the herbs a bit overwhelming and it took me a while to eat so by the end it was pretty soggy.

I'm definitely getting a pain o chocolat to go!

Laurel Hotel

Commiserating our auction loss at the Laurel Hotel rooftop bar on a beautiful sunny Melbourne day

Rusty Duck

I expected this place would be much the same as the other Moonee Ponds cafes - generic menu, average quality food and coffee, and no creativity!

I was kinda right - but there were some surprises!!

Reid had the corn fritters with poached eggs and hollindaise. It was well presented, the hollindaise was homemade and the serving size was substantial!!

I had eggs benedict and it couldn't have been more different - the presentation wasn't great (although there isn't much you can do with eggs benny), the hollindaise looked pale and from a jar and the ham was a bit average.

Coffee was ok

Plus one of the wait staff was a bit odd - her facial expressions suggested impatience, but her words were regular and polite!

Post Office Hotel

We've ventured into Coburg for breakfast today, at the Post Office Hotel

The menu seems pretty generic but they dress up the standard options with a bit of flair. The eggs benedict came with prosciutto and Reid's poached eggs and chorizo came with pickled peppers on the side

The quirky waiter thought the chef had nailed the hollindaise - I thought it was a bit buttery, but it was still pretty good and definitely handmade

A Minor Place

Quick hearty breakfast old reliable (although today Reid's corn fritters weren't the best!) before heading out for a full day of house hunting!

Ray, again

Back at Ray - the food is amazing, AGAIN, the best hollindaise sauce!

Reid had the Tunisian Firecracker - also with a great sauce, and the best bacon!!

Sunday, October 07, 2012

Proud Mary

The coffee is amazing!!

I forgot to take pics of the food. I had bacon, eggs and hash with a bagna cauda sauce. There was a lot of sauce - it was a bit overwhelming!

Otherwise all the food looks great - we sat at a communal table - I had plenty of food envy!

Simply Spanish

Sitting in the Sunday afternoon sun having paella and a glass of vino at Simply Spanish at the South Melbourne Market - yummo!!

Rockwell & Sons

Rockwell & Sons is one of several new spots on Smith St, headed up by some heavy hitters from the Melbourne food world.

http://www.broadsheet.com.au/melbourne/food-and-drink/article/rockwell-and-sons-opens-smith-street

Overall the food was a little bit sweet, but still very tasty and well presented. The coffee tasted like coffee (as opposed to coffee flavoured milk)

The interior design is pretty cool too

Back at Jellystone

Good again!! Very busy spot, but good service and food is served quickly.

Reid had a very tasty bloody Mary

I had the middle east eggs again - still awesome, although maybe a fraction too much beetroot pesto this time

Pope Joan

We headed back to an old favourite today - Pope Joan is always good!

They've revised their menu since our last visit so everything is new and a bit more expensive, most of the brunch type meals at $18 or $19.
I had the smoked trout with scrambled eggs, corn loaf and a hollandaise butter. Reid had the bacon steak and poached egg. Both very well presented and so tasty - every component of the meal worked so  well with each other.

Jellystone cafe

Cool cafe! Amazing food presentation! Middle eastern eggs were so tasty, perfectly poached! Good hollandaise on the florentine!

Monsieur Truffe

Behind a little red door on Lygon St is a huge cafe & chocolaterie! They make their own chocolate and there's a big chocolate wheel in the middle of the cafe.

The food was pretty good - the poached eggs were a perfect consistency and the thick bacon with tasty. Three bucks for the side of avocado was a bit of a con tho!

The staff were really friendly and the customers were a bit more hipster than your regular Brunswick cafe (if that's possible)

I'm definitely getting a pastry to take away!

Grub Hole

After a work function at the Grub Hole on Thursday night, We came back to check it out for weekend breakfast.

The Grub Hole is hidden on Moor St - a little one way off Brunswick Street. It would be hard to stumble upon.

The menu isn't really breakfast - although they do have smashed eggs (smashed up hard boiled eggs).

The food was really tasty, nice warm bread and freshly squeezed OJ, the prices are reasonable, and the coffee was good!

There were a few unusual items on the menu - like pumpernickel - a heavy but sweet dark rye.

And of course they have a very cute & friendly dog that wanders about! So other dogs are welcome

Ray

We've been meaning to come to Ray for ages! Finally made it today and it was awesome!

Short menu with great choices and nice additions that gave the meal something extra - like the red onion jam on the BLAT.

Coffee was good too!

There must be a few Kiwis on the staff - lots of little NZ hints around, like the old edition of the Edmonds Cookbook behind the counter.

Miss Marmalade

Very busy little cafe tucked away on Union street, just off Sydney road! Tasty menu & good coffee, although Reid's beans were a bit undercooked!

We'd been here before - but today it seemed a lot busier. Popular we spot

Beautiful day today! Last night it was so windy we couldn't pitch the tent until 9.30pm!!

Cavellero

We're back at Cavellero on Smith street for a late lunch.

I had the cheeseburger and Reid had the meatball sandwich, both looked good, but the style didn't really convert into substance. Nice but not awesome.

The place itself is pretty cool, they have a little courtyard out the back, comfy booths, and a deer head mounted behind the bar. I'd like to come back and try out it for a few drinks one night

Chin Chin

Dinner at Chin Chin before going to see Ira Glass (from This American Life fame).

Chin Chin doesn't take reservations. It was a Monday night and I arrived about 5.30pm and got a table straight away. By about 5.45pm there was a pretty big queue.

The food was fantastic - so fresh. Would definitely recommend to others and would love to go back

The only downside, we did feel a bit rushed - we ordered entrees and mains and they all came out pretty much at the same time so our table was very crowded.

Proud Mary

At Proud Mary for brunch - awesome cafe! The coffee is brilliant and they have an amazing array of coffee making paraphernalia. I spent ages watching a guy brewing samples using a beaker and bunsen burner.

The food was great too - excellent menu selections and quality ingredients

Will definitely come back!
